Statement following tragic incident at Glaisdale

Published 29th Dec 2023

Just before 12pm on Thursday, 28 December North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to the River Esk near Glaisdale on the North York Moors.

Crews from Thirsk, Whitby, Malton, Northallerton, Danby and Ripon were mobilised to the scene.

North Yorkshire Police, Cleveland Mountain Rescue, the Coastguard and Yorkshire Ambulance Service also attended the scene.

Three men, travelling in a Landrover, were extracted from the vehicle, but were sadly, pronounced dead a short time later.

Due to the rising river levels following a period of heavy rain, crews were unable to remove the vehicle from the water, instead it was anchored in place.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of those who have lost a loved one.

The incident has now been handed over to our colleagues at North Yorkshire Police who are carrying out an investigation to establish the full circumstances.
