Tunnel to Towers Run 2009

23rd July 2009

On the 27th September 2009, four members of North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service personnel from Northallerton are taking part in the Tunnel to Towers run in New York to raise money for The Fire Fighters Charity. The run is being held to commemorate the lives lost in the twin towers disaster on September 11th 2001 and in particular that of a fire fighter who ran from the Battery Bridge Tunnel to the Twin Towers (the route of the race) and sadly lost his life when the towers came down.

Kelly Martin, James Titchener, Jennie Pitt and Dave Pitt are hoping to raise £5000 for the charity. They have already undertaken several events and have more planned including a Charity Car Wash at Homebase/Halford Carpark, Northallerton on Sat 25th July (Featuring Welephant) between1000-1500hrs.

They are also in the process of organising a race night which take place on 11th  September at a venue in Northallerton, and will include a grand raffle with lots of great family prizes to win. There will also be a car boot sale, fashion show and sale of women’s evening gowns. The team will also be making an appearance at other local events so please contact them for more information.

If you would be interested in supporting the team and this worthwhile cause then you can contact them on 01609 788595 or 07877133563, email  or or visit or

Kelly says: “We’re really looking forward to the run, and are proud to be doing it for such a brilliant cause. You can’t help but be moved by the events that happened on that day back in 2001, and we wanted to do something to honour the brave actions of the fire fighters and other emergency services personnel who attended the scene.”

Kelly continues: “We would like to thank everyone who has supported us so far including; Tesco, Halfords, Homebase, Richmond, Northallerton and Leyburn Fire Stations and all of the local businesses who have donated gifts for us to raffle, along with all the individuals who have donated money.”
