Multi-agency road safety event aims to help young drivers

17th March 2009

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (NYFRS) is working with partners to host a multi agency event evening for young drivers and their parents next Tuesday (24th March) evening from 7pm to 9pm. The aim of the evening is to raise awareness of the hazards and distractions that can affect new and young drivers.

The event is at Harrogate Fire Station, Skipton Road and will include:

  • A presentation from NYFRS, North Yorkshire Police and road safety representatives
  • Practical demonstrations including a brake reaction test and a seat belt ‘sledge’
  • A simulated road traffic collision, showing how the emergency services would deal with such an incident
  • The chance to win two free driving consultations, donated by Helen Dickinson Driver Training

Jonathan Foster, Group Manager for NYFRS said: "Ultimately, we would like to help reduce the number of road accidents, deaths and injuries for drivers under 25 through educational events like this. We would like to see as many young drivers as possible at this event, as well as their parents, as we really need to bring home how vulnerable we all are while in a car. We aim to show you the dangers on the district's roads an even help improve their driving skills."

"Parents will play a vital role by encouraging their children to drive safely, which could one day save their life. This event is not for the faint hearted though - very young children are advised not to attend as some of the images we show may be too shocking for them."

Any new, young drivers and their parents are welcome to attend the evening:

Date: Tuesday 24th march

Time: 7pm to 9pm

Venue: Harrogate Fire Station, Skipton Road, Harrogate, HG1 4LE
