Fire and Rescue Service promotes "Safer Houses" to landlords

19th May 2009

As part of its ‘Safer Houses’ campaign, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service are hosting a seminar on Friday 29th May, aiming to support landlords across Scarborough.

The Safer Houses campaign has been launched to promote fire safety in ‘multiple-occupancy’ homes across Scarborough, following a spate of almost 40 fires in those types of property over the last 12 months.

The aim of the workshop is to arm landlords with all the information needed to make sure they know what their responsibilities are as a landlord and alert them to the dangers of non-compliance.

At the event, there will be:

  • Presentations at 2pm and 4pm on risk assessments and owners’ responsibilities, from North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (NYFRS) experts in fire safety,
  • The chance for one-to-one discussions with specialist NYFRS Officers
  • An opportunity to meet representatives from Scarborough Council Environmental Housing Officers

Group Manager for Scarborough, Danny Westmoreland said: “We are running this important workshop to support landlords, as we do not want to see repeats of the serious house fires we have dealt with over the last year.

“The event will help landlords become more aware of their legal responsibilities. It will also demonstrate that small investments now to improve fire safety in their properties far outweigh the potential costs they could face in the future, if there is a fire in their premises. For instance, they could face fines, refurbishment costs, loss of income, compensation claims, legal costs and the loss of reputation and none of us want that to happen.

“I would urge landlords to attend this important event, so that we can help you support your tenants and hopefully avoid unnecessary costs in the future.”

The Fire Risk Awareness Workshop is on Friday 29th May in the Conference Room, Scarborough Bowls Centre, Peasholm Road, Scarborough, between 1pm and 6pm. The presentations will take place at 2pm and 4pm.
