National Car Wash Day

5th March 2009

Fire Fighters across North Yorkshire are supporting The Fire Fighters Charity’s National Car Wash Day on Saturday 7th March.

The events will give drivers the chance to learn more about home fire safety and the potential dangers of fires in the home while their cars receive a shampoo and polish.

There will also be a chance to make a charitable donation, with funds going to The Fire Fighters Charity – the official organisation which exists for injured fire fighters and their families during times of need. The Charity helps over 13,000 injured individuals a year by providing pioneering treatment and support services.

Organiser of one of the North Yorkshire events, Fire Fighter Terence Gregg from York Fire Station, said: “We want to raise essential funds for The Fire Fighters Charity in order for them to carry on supporting people in need. There is also another serious reason for taking part in this event. Despite our best efforts, we have still seen how fires can destroy lives. By learning more about safety around the home, lives can be saved.”

The North Yorkshire events are as follows:

Saturday 7th March:

Sainsbury’s, Foss Island, York from 10am to 2pm

Harrogate Fire Station, Skipton Road, Harrogate from 10am to 4pm
Ripon Fire Station, Stonebridgegate, Ripon from 10am to 2pm

There is also an additional event on Saturday 14th March at Skipton Fire Station, Boroughbridge Road, Skipton.

The event has also attracted celebrity endorsement from This Morning co-host Fern Brittan, who will be washing cars in Buckinghamshire. Fern said: “I applaud the bravery of the fire fighters who routinely put themselves in harm’s way, making split second decisions to save lives.
“The Fire Fighters Charity helps support injured fire fighters, both physically and emotionally, enabling them to return to work faster. The Charity receives no government funding and relies entirely on beneficiaries and public donations. By stopping to have your car washed, you will not only help raise greatly needed funds for the charity, but also educate your family about fire safety.”
