Tadcaster Firefighters search for "Mystery Matchstick Model Man"

17th September 2009

A man walked in to Tadcaster Fire station on Wednesday 16th September and presented firefighters with a beautiful handmade matchstick model of a vintage fire engine. The man who would only give his name as “Mr X” said that he wanted to give the gift as a token of his appreciation for the work that the fire service did in Tadcaster. The man then promptly left without giving any further detail about his identity.

Tadcaster Station Manager Cecil Pugh says “we are absolutely delighted with this gift. Personnel at Tadcaster frequently receive letters of appreciation from members of the public and have also recently received a special award from Tadcaster Town Council but this is something very different. The model is beautifully made and must have taken an enormous amount of time to make. I am only disappointed that “Mr X” did not give us his real name so that we could thank him properly for what he has done.

The model mounted on a wooden plinth has a brass plate with the words, “To Tadcaster Fire Service, Times change – the dedication endures.”

The model will now be put on display in the Fire Station for visitors and staff alike to appreciate.
