CFO's Commendation for Local Filey Man

4th August 2009

A local man’s brave actions have been recognised at North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service’s Annual Awards Ceremony which took place at Harrogate Pavilions on 23rd July. The ceremony celebrates the good conduct and long service of staff members within the service, alongside honours for staff and members of our communities.

This year, Andrew Winfield received a Chief Fire Officer’s Commendation for the actions he took in January this year. Andrew Winfield was working as a joiner on Queens Street in Filey when he spotted a fire in a house opposite where he was working. He phoned 999 and hammered on the door to see if there was anyone inside the house. He led a lady out of the property, who told him that her husband was still inside. Andrew dashed back inside and tried to go up the stairs, but the fire was too severe so he shouted out to alert the man who was on the first floor. The gentleman appeared and Andrew assisted him out. Both of the occupants of the house managed to escape the fire without injury, due to Andrew’s quick thinking.

Group Manager for Scarborough Danny Westmoreland, who nominated Andrew for this award said; “Andrew acted very courageously and risked harm to himself to assist others which is very commendable. He took the right course of action by first calling 999 and then he alerted the occupants and assisted them out of the property.”
