Student Fire Safety Advice
If you're moving into rented accommodation follow our top tips below:
- We know cleaning probably isn't a top priority when you're a student but keeping the cooker and grill clean reduces the chance of a fire starting.
- If you're planning to eat a lot of chips, we'd recommend oven chips or using a thermostat controlled deep fat fryer. If oil in a pan catches fire never throw water on to it.
- Don't overload the sockets in your house/flat.
- Make sure you've unplugged things like mobile phone chargers, laptop chargers and hair straighteners before you go out or go to bed.
- Don't put anything metal (including tin foil) in the microwave
- If you smoke extinguish cigarettes carefully
- Been out for a few drinks? Get a take away instead of coming home to cook
- If you're in private rented accommodation you should have smoke alarms fitted by your landlord on each level of the property. Find out more about your Landlord's responsibilities
- Keep candles away from anything flammable and make sure you extinguish them before going to bed or going out.
