StayWise has a wide range of lesson plans, interactive games, activities and other resources to promote fire safety – and other safety messages – to children and young people. Many resources link to the other areas of the curriculum, allowing fire safety messages to be relayed as part of maths, English and science lessons for example.
Great Fire of London – Education
The National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) has called for schools to stop recreating physical scenes from the Great Fire of London and purposely setting the models alight to highlight how the fire spread and grew from a small bakery in Pudding Lane during the great fire of 1666.
The NFCC recognises the importance of historical teachings and learning from the Great Fire but would promote this learning through the use of other means such online footage.
Children and young people can have a fascination with fire and may be tempted to recreate these scenes themselves after watching trusted adults (teachers or firefighters) doing this in school. This can put young people in a situation that provides a real risk to them and others should any fires get out of control.
Therefore NYFRS will reject any requests from schools for appliance attendance to supervise and then extinguish the fire and provide appropriate advice on where to find supportive literature and media footage. These active displays not only constitute a fire risk but can also promote fire setting behaviour.
The provision of appliances at schools for supervision and extinguishing purposes ties up valuable resources which may be needed for real emergencies. The offer of an appliance at a school for this purpose cannot be replicated in all schools across the UK which could result in a large number of schools undertaking these activities without appropriate safety measures in place.
School educational packages
Fire Safety – Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3
Our fire safety talks have been designed to have maximum impact and include a variety of different learning styles such as verbal, written and kinesthetic.
We have different presentations for different age ranges such as ‘Get out, stay out, get the fire service out’ for Key Stage 2 to ‘consequences of anti-social behaviour and deliberate fire setting’ for Key Stage 3.
Road Safety – Various Ages
NYFRS Support the York & North Yorkshire Road Safety Partnership to deliver Road Safety Educational Packages in schools and educational establishments, for more information on this please contact use via roadsafetyevents@northyorksfire.gov.uk.
Dark Nights – Key Stage 2
This is where a member of our staff will come into your school and talk to pupils in the lead up to Halloween and Bonfire Night. They will cover firework safety, bonfire safety, and road safety on the darker nights.

If your school would like to receive one of our education packages mentioned above please contact prevention@northyorksfire.gov.uk.
We’re sorry that we’re not able to visit any year groups other than those stated above to deliver these packages (this includes nurseries and childminders), as we are trying to target our work in specific risk areas and only have a limited number of teams available to do this work.
