As of 7th May 2024 the York and North Yorkshire Mayor mayor took on the responsibilities of the police, fire and crime commissioner for York and North Yorkshire. On the same day, the Office of the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner became part of the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority and was renamed the York and North Yorkshire Office for Policing, Fire, Crime and Commissioning (OPFCC).

On the 15th November 2018, the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority’s governance of the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service passed to the North Yorkshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner.
